What is Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is a 12 digit identification number card issued by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
The UIDAI is established to assign a 12-digit unique identification (UID) number (termed as Aadhaar) to all the residents of India. Aadhaar issued by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will serve as a unique identification of all individuals residing in India and may be used as a identity proof and/ or address proof all over the country. The UIDAI is responsible for issuing Aadhar Card and for managing the Aadhaar numbers records and Aadhaar identification cards.
Any individual resident in India who satisfies the verification process required by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) irrespective of age and gender could enroll for Aadhaar. To enrol for Aadhar Card, a person has to provide demographic and biometric information during the enrolment process.
The Aadhaar project is attempt to make a single, unique identification document or number or identity proof of every resident Indian individual that would capture all the details, including demographic and biometric information.
- In Demographic information – Name, Date of Birth (verified) or Age (declared), Gender, Address, Mobile Number and Email ID is required, and
- Under Biometric information – Ten Fingerprints, Two Iris Scans, and Facial Photograph of the applicant is needed.
After completing the verification and formalities Aadhaar Card with a unique number will be provided to an individual and will remain valid for life.
The Aadhaar number serves as a proof of identity. Aadhaar Card is made irrespective of any intelligence and is not based on caste, religion, income, health and geography. Aadhaar is a proof of residence and not a proof of citizenship. It does not itself grant any rights to domicile in India.
An individual needs to enrol for Aadhaar only once and duplicate aadhar card can be downloaded online or now, even you can go for mobile aadhaar (mAadhaar) by downloading the mAadhaar App in your Android phones.
